    Great video. Thanks for doing it. I have a question however. For both demos, did you record in the same room with the microphone, same settings on audio interface, same distance etc? They sound so much different that I’m a bit sceptical that there would be such a difference between the string types. I’ve been playing guitar since I’m 12 and now going on 64 having tried and used every brand and types of strings on my acoustics and none made a drastic difference. They all have their characteristics for sure but the recording of the guitar with the non XS strings seemed to have been recorded further away from the microphone?

    • @JTravlos
      @JTravlos 14 днів тому

      Yes, Same equipment, same room same distance as close as I could get. However in hind sight even the slightest micro adjustment in my sitting could affect the sound. I was still aware of this while recording but wish I actually had a clip on mic for the guitar rather than a stereo pair 6 inches from the 14th fret. Even 1 inch would have made a difference. It was so hard to eliminate all those variables. Thanks for watching though!

    8020s have less string tension than phosphor bronze.... You end up coming close to going to like a .10 on the wound strings with more tension on the higher strings than the normal phosphor bronze ratio.... 80/20s are going to be too anemic in a custom light size... Which already is too light of string gauge for me... 12s are barely passible for my taste

    I bet your guitar would sound better with plastic bridge pins. The highs on your guitar are too overwhelming and it sounds shrill. I have a guitar like yours, different brand but same tone. I was even about to sell it at one time. I put plastic bridge pins in it and now it’s one of my favorite guitars. I’d tried brass, bone and ebony. I thought the ebony would tone it down but they didn’t. Not until I used plastic. Cheers mate

    80-20's are mid scooped... Which can be a little much on a rosewood guitar.... They can be really good for giving a singer a place to sit and be supported by a guitar.... I tend to like them on mahogany guitars especially... Don't think I'd recommend it if there's not a singer involved. This seems like one of those string sets That needs a couple days to calm down.... I'd like to hear it after they've been on the guitar for a couple days. I think they really might EQ out a rosewood guitar if that's what someone is looking for...

    Ooh... I think I what these strings are doing.... For guitars that don't want warmer style strings... I like these better than the elixirs. Stringjoy coated strings are really good on some guitars.... But that style of string needs a heavier gauge than 11... I think you can get away with 11s better with coated strings.... The Nashville community... A lot of those players use 13s. And certainly don't go lower than 12s...

    I went under head phones the second time I heard it. There is definitely a difference! The bass strings have more volume and the tonal frequency range dropped, meaning less tinny. The treble strings are definitely more damped in the tonal range, with a shift to the lower spectrum. I enjoyed them, but the difference would no doubt come down to personal taste and preference. Not sure it's worth the C-note they want for them.

    The main difference is from weighing down the bridge.... It's the exact opposite of what a luthor will suggest to do. If you want louder and a pleasant way try bone or tusq. Sometimes people even split their bridge pins between matching (close enough) tusq and ebony. For string volume balance. Tusq on the wound springs... Ebony on the unwound.

  • @ramspencer5492
    @ramspencer5492 Місяць тому

    For me they're garbage. They just weigh down the bridge.... Deadening the sound of the guitar. Maybe there's some cheap guitars or something or some situation where they'll make someone's guitar sound better. But they were just tone ruining on a decent guitar in my experience. Ask any luthier or guitar professional and the warn you against using heavy bridge pins. You can get increases in sustain with bone or even tusq over plastic or even wood. But on some guitars you're upper strings could give a little brittle sounding

      I took the strings off my acoustic and lost the bridge pins while waiting on the new ones to arrive' I ended up taking an hollow aluminum suitcase handle and drilling holes in it' put all the strings through the holes and threaded the strings up through the bridge from inside the sound hole. Kinda give it that sound of being packed and ready to take a trip.

    Stumbled on to this video and I have to say, I disagree on Stringjoy. I have been using Stringjoy strings since 2014, when they were a small shop/office above a music venue in Nashville. I've seen them grow, and how their strings have changed some over the years. I use their electric and acoustic strings, and I love their strings, but you don't. Tone and feel are both very subjective things here (as we all know) and that is all A-O-K. I personally prefer their acoustic strings because they are a bit warmer (not dead) and not "shimmery" or "sparkly" like a fresh set of Elixirs or D'Addario. If you want something brighter, try their 80/20 or their coated strings and do another shootout that's comparable, but their PB strings are the best to me and a lot of peoples ears when it comes to acoustic. They sound like a good set of broken in strings straight out of the box, and personally that's what I want when I hear an acoustic - a warm tone and I don't want something overly bright. Taylors are notorious for being bright, so that's likely what you're used to hearing with that 812ce. An overly bright acoustic is terrible in a mix and not good in most sessions or live applications. I use at Taylor 814ce with a set of Stringjoy 12's PB and it's great to my ears and have no complaints on it in live or studio settings. I don't typically comment on videos, but you had such disdain for Stringjoy I just felt the need to 😅. And for context, I used D'Addario for years and years before Stringjoy came along. I lived in Nashville for 10 years as a touring and session musician, and I even tried Elixir for a bit, but I stuck with Stringjoy. They last longer, and I've never broken a Stringjoy a string - while I've broken strings from all other companies (D'Addario, Elixir, Ernie Ball, etc).
